How It Works

JPG and WebP conversions use a high quality setting by default so there's minimal visible difference from the original, while PNG conversion is completely lossless, meaning it preserves every pixel exactly. The one thing that changes structurally when going from PNG to JPG is transparency: JPG has no concept of transparent pixels, so any transparent background in your original PNG gets replaced with a solid color once converted.

JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Format Should You Pick?
JPG is the most universally accepted format across exam portals, government forms, and older systems, and it's usually the safest default when a form doesn't specify. PNG is the better choice for logos, scanned documents with sharp text, or any image where you need a transparent background preserved, at the cost of a noticeably larger file size for photographic content. WebP sits in between: it typically produces smaller files than JPG at a similar visual quality and does support transparency, but a smaller number of older systems and some government upload portals still don't accept it, so it's worth checking before you rely on it for an official application.
If in doubt for an exam or government form specifically, JPG remains the format least likely to cause an unexpected rejection, simply because it's been the default expectation for the longest.
