How CAT Scoring Actually Works
CAT's scoring starts simply enough: three marks for every correct MCQ, minus one mark for every incorrect MCQ, and no penalty at all for a wrong answer on a TITA (Type In The Answer) question, since those don't carry negative marking. Add up your correct and incorrect answers across VARC, DILR, and QA, and you get your raw score for the day.
Here's where it gets a bit more nuanced: your raw score isn't the number that actually gets used for shortlisting. CAT is conducted across multiple slots on the same day, and no two slots get an identical paper. To make the comparison fair across slots, IIMs run a statistical normalization process that converts every candidate's raw score into a scaled score, adjusted for how difficult their particular slot's paper was relative to the others. This is conceptually similar to what NTA does for JEE Main, just calculated differently behind the scenes. The exact formula isn't published, but it consistently rewards candidates who performed well relative to their own slot's difficulty level, not just candidates who happened to get an easier paper.
Historical CAT Marks vs Percentile Data
Looking back at recent CAT cycles gives a useful sense of scale, even though the exact mapping shifts slightly every year. Scaled scores above roughly 200 have historically clustered around the 99.9 percentile mark and above. Scores in the 150 to 190 range have typically landed somewhere between the 93rd and 99th percentile. Scores dropping into the 90 to 130 range have generally corresponded to percentiles in the 65 to 90 range. Because CAT's candidate pool runs into the several lakhs each year, even small differences in scaled score can move your percentile by a noticeable amount, particularly near the very top of the distribution where competition is tightest.
IIM Cutoffs by Percentile (Approximate)
The oldest and most sought-after IIMs, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta, have historically shortlisted candidates scoring around 99 percentile and above overall. The next tier, including Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore, and Shillong, has generally shortlisted from around 97 percentile upward. Newer IIMs, including Rohtak, Ranchi, Udaipur, and several others established in the last decade or so, have typically accepted candidates from around 90 percentile, sometimes lower depending on the specific year and program. These figures are approximate and shift a bit each admission cycle based on application volume and seat availability.
Sectional Cutoffs Matter Just as Much as Your Overall Score
A strong overall percentile alone doesn't guarantee a shortlist call. Every IIM also applies minimum sectional cutoffs across VARC, DILR, and QA individually, and a candidate with an excellent overall percentile but a weak showing in even one section can still miss the cut at institutes with strict sectional requirements. This is a common surprise for candidates who focus entirely on their headline percentile number and overlook how their three individual sections stack up. If one section is noticeably weaker than the other two, it's worth checking that section's percentile separately against your target institutes' historical sectional cutoffs, not just your overall figure.
